David Loxley Blount

David Loxley Blount is a young composer who sings in the choir of St Jude's, his two adaptations of Yorkshire Folk Carols, 'Sweet Bells' 2012 and 'Diadem' 2013 were premiered in St Jude's Carol Services.

His organ composition 'Sonus Repercussus' unexpectedly won first prize, in the 2013 St Albans International Organ Festival Composition Competition (co-sponsored by Choir & Organ Magazine) against strong competition from more experienced composers. It was premiered in the Abbey at St Albans in July 2013,

The manuscript of 'Sonus Repercussus' is dedicated 'In Memorium Robert Luckham'. David got to know the retired ENO singer, also of St Jude's, through a shared interest in the British Composer Francis Pott, who had been a favourite of Robert and his wife Margaret and who is an inspiration for David in his work as a composer. We only wish that Robert could have heard 'Sonus Repercussus', he was very appreciative of David and his sister Helen in their various musical exploits.

James McVinnie, who played 'Sonus Repercussus' in St Albans (and who played for the Christening of Prince George and the entry of guests to the Wedding of William & Kate), will reprise 'Sonus Repercussus' in a free concert at St Paul's Knightsbridge at 4pm on 28th January 2014. This will be recorded by the BBC for later transmission on Radio 3. David would love to see familiar faces from the congregation of St Jude's. Details of how to obtain free tickets for the concert will be on David's website as below, as soon as they become available.

If you would like to be involved in the whole days event, please book via this link:

Because of the interest aroused by David's compositions  'Sonus Repercussus' and 'Holmfirth', (premiered by North London Chorus in 2013), other opportunities are starting to come his way, including the invitation to set some very special poetry to music, for the anniversary of the start of the First World War. The first extract of this longer work in process, will be premiered in a free event by Middlesex University on Thursday 13th March 2014, 5.30pm at St Mary's Church, Hendon, London, NW4 4JT

Epiphany 2014

This Sunday (5 January) we celebrate the Feast of the Epiphany - the visit of the 'Magi' (the wise men) to the infant Jesus. Starmer's mural painting in St Jude's portrays them as oriental kings travelling with a magnificent train and carrying lavish gifts.

The word 'epiphany' means 'manifestation' and refers to the interpretation of the Magi as the representatives of the Gentiles recognizing the infant Jesus as the King of the World.
